The Polarities Practice

This simple yet life-changing practice reveals the hidden opposites behind your emotional reactions—so you can see the full picture, loosen old patterns, and respond with freedom instead of reflex.

Every reaction has a hidden opposite. The anger you feel? Somewhere underneath it, there’s something you care about deeply. The rejection? Somewhere, a longing to belong. The Polarity practice doesn’t ask you to fix anything. It asks you to see both sides—and in seeing both, to stop being ruled by either.

What it is:
A practice that uncovers the emotional opposites driving your reactions—the push and pull beneath the surface.

What it gives:
Freedom from repetitive thought loops, greater emotional agility, and the ability to hold complexity without being torn apart by it.

What it takes:
Honesty. You have to be willing to write down what you actually feel, not what you think you should feel.

The video walks you through a full Polarities practice—a real example, in real time. You’ll watch a triggered moment get untangled, step by step, until the charge dissolves. By the end, you’ll have a simple framework you can use on your own, anytime.

Most of us live inside our stories without ever realizing we wrote them. The Polarities practice doesn’t ask you to rewrite the story. It asks you to see that every story has two sides—and that you are bigger than both. Do it daily, and the stories begin to loosen their grip. The same trigger that once hijacked you becomes a signal to pause, get curious, and find the other side. That’s not just emotional regulation. That’s freedom.

Common questions about Polarities

See all FAQs

Do I have to write things down, or can I just do it in my head?

Write it down. The act of putting words on paper pulls the pattern out of the fog and into the light. When it stays in your head, it's too easy to skip over the uncomfortable parts or talk yourself out of what you actually feel. Pen and paper make it real—and that's where the shift happens.

Over time, as the practice becomes second nature, you'll find yourself doing it on the fly—mid-conversation, mid-reaction. A thought or emotion grabs you and instead of running with it, you pause and ask: "What's the opposite of this?" That single question, asked sincerely, can rewire how you move through the world. It stops being a practice and starts becoming how you live.

What if I can’t find the “right” opposite for a word?

There's no right opposite. "Excited" could flip to "bored," "indifferent," "dreading it"—whatever lands as true for you in that moment. This isn't a vocabulary test. It's about feeling into the other side of the charge. Trust what comes up. Even a "wrong" opposite will teach you something.

That said, treat it as a feeling exercise. Feel the vibration of each side of the pair. Do they really feel like opposites? Don't stop until you've found the best vibrational match—the word that genuinely lands as the other pole. The closer your chosen word is to the true opposite, the bigger the breakthrough.

If you're really stuck, a thesaurus is fair game. It's not cheating. But finding the opposite yourself almost always delivers the most powerful shift

How is this different from just journaling?

Journaling explores. The Polarities practice untangles. Journaling can take you deeper into the story—which has its place—but Polarities uses the story to reveal the hidden emotional poles pulling you back and forth. The goal isn't self-expression. The goal is to see the mechanism, feel both sides, and release the charge. You don't process the story. You loosen its grip.

What if the same patterns keep coming up?

That's not a bug. That's the practice working, and it’s totally normal. The patterns that repeat are the ones most ready to be cleared. Each time you do a Polarities practice on the same theme—rejection, unworthiness, resentment—you're peeling another layer. Over time, the charge diminishes. What once sent you spiraling becomes a flicker you barely notice.

Can Polarities help with big trauma, or is it for everyday stuff?

The Polarities practice works across the spectrum—from minor irritations to deep, long-held wounds. But if you're working with significant trauma, go slowly and consider doing it alongside a trauma-informed therapist. The practice opens things up. Having support to integrate what surfaces is wise, not weak. For everyday triggers, though, it's an immediate tool you can reach for anytime.
